We are regulars here. This time we had their braised crab with ginger and onion, honey walnut shrimp and the three flavor sizzling rice soup. Really, too much food for two of us (but we managed to finish all of the soup, which is a large bowl, and all of the crab), but we did eat some of the shrimp and took the rest home.
Excellent meal, great service. Crab not cheap ($49.95), but some of the best crab we have had definitely better than anything at an Asian buffet, for example. The soup is great too, and very flavorful. Honey walnut shrimp was crisped to battered perfection.
This was a hot humid day in Del Mar and even with the A/C running inside was a little hot and muggy. -

Double Happiness is the perfect place to go if you want amazing Chinese food. Any day I'll be willing to do the 30 mile drive to get their food. My favorite to order is the rice cake dish, it's served perfectly with little bits of lamb. I also tried the green pepper beef, which was cooked perfectly.
To add, the servers are really nice and the food comes out fast. 5/5 recommend. -

Great ambiance. Cozy settings. Very nice staff. Owners also came out and greeted us. Service was prompt and very friendly. Food was authentic and very good. The sweet and sour fish was delicious. We put the sauce o the side. Give this place a try. You won't be disappointed

We loved this restaurant!! From Seattle -- dropped off freshman triplet #3 to college at USD and thought Chinese sounded good. Decided to go to La Jolla, but the Chinese restaurant we chose was closed for renovation. So happy that it was! Came to Double Happiness and had a perfect meal experience. The staff is so welcoming... great food... large portions (enough food for another dinner!). Just wanted to say, "thank you!" We'll be back when we visit our son!

Ok guys I've been here 3 times now. There are positives to this little 15 table Del Mar staple. The staff is always kind. Most dishes are flavorful and they do not use MSG...so they said.
Here's the deal... they have no system in order for a rush of people. So even if tables are open you can still end up waiting 30mins to sit down. I can't explain it.
So tonight we ordered large egg drop for the 3 of us and it came out literally extra thick and cold. We asked for it to be heated up and they brought it back 2nd time still not hot. We decided to eat it but then discovered it truly had a taste of dirty dish water so I would stay away from that.
We also ordered Mongolian beef and sweet & sour chicken. The beef has a great flavor but was served under cooked (raw pieces throughout dish) so that also had to be sent back to be fully cooked. The chicken was just fine and always a favorite for my 13yo.
We struggled getting our water refilled or anyone in general, if we had an issue or needed anything. It's been this way all 3 visits so I'm thinking this may be the norm.
My recommendation, if you want Chinese food...call for take out! The food has been good, not great, for the most part, minus the egg drop soup ... but for those of us in Carmel Valley/Del Mar it's the closest option.
